SUMMARY OF STEPS REQUIRED IN EARNING THE ED.D. DEGREE IN THE COLLEGE TEACHING OF
AN ACADEMIC SUBJECT AT TEACHERS COLLEGE, COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY
1. ADMISSION. Seek admission through the Teachers College Admission Office to a program of study leading toward
certification for the Ed.D. degree in the College Teaching of an Academic Subject.
2. MAJOR ADVISER. Obtain approval from a professor to work with you in the area of specialization.
3. PROGRAM PLAN. Prepare a Program Plan of at least 90 points, in accordance with the program of your area of specialization,
which shall include: (a) at least six Teachers College courses for letter grades; (b) 15 points in courses from
outside the major department which must include not less than two courses, for a minimum of two points each, in
the areas of study dealing with higher education, adult education, curriculum on the post secondary level, psychology
of late adolescence/and or psychology of the adult; the areas of specialization and internship courses; and foreign
languages, if required.
4. STATEMENT OF TOTAL PROGRAM. Prepare a statement giving your plans for meeting total program objectives. Have
your adviser indicate approval by signing it, and file it in the Office of Doctoral Studies.
5. CERTIFICATION EXAMINATION. Apply and take (with the adviser's approval), the Certification Examination. See
Academic Calendar for dates and deadlines.
6. TWENTY POINTS IN TEACHERS COLLEGE COURSES ARE REQUIRED AFTER TAKING CERTIFICATION EXAMINATION FOR THE FIRST
TIME.
7. DEPARTMENTAL RECOMMENDATION FOR CERTIFICATION. A positive recommendation by your Department, based on satisfactory
test scores, grades, and appraisal, is a prerequisite for recommendation.
8. CONTINUOUS REGISTRATION REQUIREMENT.
9. DISSERTATION PROPOSAL APPROVAL.
10. DEPARTMENT DISSERTATION CONFERENCE.
11. COMPLETION OF REQUIRED COURSES AND STATEMENT OF TOTAL PROGRAM.
12. FINAL ORAL DEFENSE OF THE DISSERTATION.
13. VERIFICATION OF TEACHING EXPERIENCE OR INTERNSHIP.
14. DEPOSIT OF THE DISSERTATION AND ABSTRACTS. |
