MA Program Tracks

Our program offers two ways to design your coursework, or "tracks".  Students can choose to enroll in the Applied Track, a semi-structured program of study that provides a core curriculum covering the essential knowledge of Clinical Psychology, or the General Track, in which they have the same course offerings but greater flexibility to tailor their curriculum within or outside of our department. Both General and Applied tracks are 36 credits in total.

General Track (PsyG) - 18 of 36 credits must be in-program

The General Track provides students with the flexibility to design their own curriculum and concentrate their coursework in a particular sub-specialty within Clinical Psychology. Concentration areas include Research Methods; Child & Family; Spirituality & Contemplative Practices; Training in Underserved Populations; Psychotherapy and Psychoanalytic Perspectives; Global Mental Health & Trauma; Sexuality, Women, & Gender (See "Concentrations" tab for more information). Students in the General Track must take 18 of their 36 credits (usually 6 classes) inside the Clinical Psychology program. To fulfill the college's Breadth Requirement they will also take three courses (2-3 credits each) in other programs at Teachers College and, if they choose, they can take 3-4 courses at other branches of Columbia University such as the Mailman School of Public Health, the School of International and Public Affairs, or graduate departments on main campus. With maximum flexibility, the General Track may be ideal for students who have prior coursework or experience in the field.

Applied Track (PsyA) - 24 of 36 credits must be in-program

Students who prefer a structured course of study, or who are new to Clinical Psychology, may find the Applied Track right for them. The Applied Track is a core curriculum ensuring a solid foundation in the field. Students must complete 24 credits within the department. To fulfill the college's Breadth Requirement they will also take three courses (2-3 credits each) in other programs at Teachers College and these must include two courses in statistics (e.g. probability, regression, linear models). If they choose, Applied Track students may take 1  course at another branch of Columbia University such as the Mailman School of Public Health, the School of International and Public Affairs, or graduate departments on main campus.
