Microsoft Phone Scam

Updated: 12/18/13

The CIS Help Desk has received several reports of TC employees receiving phone calls from individuals claiming to be from Microsoft Support. The caller advises them that a virus has been found on their computer and offers remote support by directing the user to a malicious web site.

If you receive a call, please do not provide any information, just hang up. If you are able to, please log the date, time and caller ID if any appears and send that information via email to the CISHelpDesk@tc.columbia.edu.

If you have already received a call and accessed a link or provided any information, please contact the CISHelpDesk immediately so that we can attempt to prevent any further damage.

Additional information on the phone scam can be found on the following Microsoft site:

http://www.microsoft.com/security/online-privacy/avoid-phone-scams.aspx

If you have any questions, feel free to contact the help desk at x3300 or me.

Thanks
