Ph.D. Degree Requirements

Requirements for the Ph.D. program

 

1. Core Courses (at least 24 credits)

Microeconomics (at least 3)

  • EDPE 4056: Microeconomics (3), only if required  
  • EDPE 6151: Advanced Microeconomics (3)

Economics of Education (9)

     
  • EDPE 4050: Economics of Education (3)  
  • EDPE 4055: Resource Allocation in Education (3)  
  • EDPE 4058: Economics of Higher Education (3)

Labor Economics (at least 3 credits)

     
  • EDPE 6052: Ph.D. Applied Labor Market Analysis  
  • G6451-6452: Economics of Labor I & II (Economics Department)

Public Finance/Educational Finance (at least 3 credits)

     
  • EDPE 4097: International Comparative Studies in Educational Finance (3)  
  • EDPE 4155: Education, Privatization and School Choice (3)
  • G6806: Public Finance III (3) Economics Department

Education and Economic Development (at least 3 credits)

     
  • EDPE 4051: Education and Economic Development (3)  
  • EDPE 6050: Education and Economic Development: Advanced Topics (3)

 

2. Research Methods (at least 12 credits)

Econometrics (at least 6 credits)

     
  • U6610: Econometric Techniques for Policy Managers(3)  (Program in Economic Policy Management, SIPA)  
  • EDPE 6023: Quantitative Methods for Causal Inference in Educational  Research (3)

  • G6417: Econometrics III (3) (Economics Department)  
  • U8990: Quantitative methods in Program Evaluation and Policy  Research (School of International and Public Affairs)

Dissertation Research (at least 6 credits)

     
  • EDPE 5550: Workshop in Economics of Education (3)  
  • Three semesters of continuous registration in a research seminar, (i.e., EDPE 6950: Studies in Economics and Education or consult with adviser) for 1 point

 

3. Specialization (at least 39 credits)

Course work for the specialization should be developed individually by the student with guidance from their adviser

  • Education and economic development  
  • Education and the transition to work  
  • Educational finance  
  • Economics of urban and minority education  
  • Economic evaluation of education  
  • Economics of new educational technology  
  • Teacher markets

 

4. Other Requirements to Fulfill

Electives: at least 6 credits taken outside of the program but within Teachers College (no less than 2 credits in each course)

     
  • Competence in 1 foreign language  
  • Certification Examination consisting of two parts:

        1. Three-hour exam

        2. Literature review with guidelines

     
  • Doctoral Dissertation (proposal, research, writing and defense)
