Time to Completion
The PhD program can be completed in 5.2 years (enter in September of Year 1, graduate in October of Year 5) if students begin a program of research early in the program and complete the doctoral certification requirements (research methods examination, theoretical and empirical paper) by the 4th year of the program. Typically, most of the coursework (including practica, fieldwork, and externship) is completed by the end of the third year if the student completes only the one required externship. However, all students opt to do two externships to make himself or herself more competitive in the APPIC match (one in a clinical setting, one in a public school), extending externship into the 4th year. The 4th and 5th years are devoted to dissertation and internship. Over the last 7 years (2006-2012) 39 students have completed the program. For the 25 students entering the program from the bachelor’s degree the mean time to completion was 8.1 years and the median was 7.2 years. Of the 9 students who have graduated in the last 3 years (2010-2012), the mean time to completion was 6.9 and the median 7.2 years. For the 14 students entering the PhD from our Ed.M. program (2 years advanced standing) the mean time to completion was 5.8 years and the median was 5.1 years. Of the 7 students who graduated in the last 3 years, the mean time to completion was 5.6 and the median was 4.75 years.
