New York State Teacher Certification

In order to be eligible for New York State teacher certification as a Teacher of ASL as a Foreign Language, you need to complete the following:

M.A. Program

Completion of a Master of Arts program of studies in the Teachers College Program in the Teaching of American Sign Language as a Foreign Language.

Substance Abuse Lecture

In order to be eligible for teacher certification, the New York State Education Department requires that students must have two (2) hours of coursework or training regarding the identification and reporting of child substance abuse from a state approved model. The Office of Teacher Education will offer one approved class on this topic in the fall and spring semesters. A test covering this material is a requirement of any student applying for certification. Tests may be obtained from the Health and Behavior Studies main office, 531 Thorridike Hall, and taken on an individual basis. You may take this test as often as needed to obtain a passing grade.

Child Abuse Lecture

In order to be eligible for teacher certification, the New York State Education Department requires that students must have two (2) hours of coursework or training regarding the identification and reporting of child abuse and maltreatment from a state approved model. The Office of Teacher Education will offer one approved class on this topic in the fall and spring semesters.

New York State Teacher Certification Examination

You must pass this exam before the State will grant you certification as a teacher. Booklets are available at the Office of Teacher Education.

Office of Teacher Education Forms

In order to graduate, you must have all the necessary forms signed and handed in to the Office of Teacher Education. It is recommended that you xerox any form before handing it in since papers may get lost or misplaced. Deadlines for handing in papers are reported on the top copy of your packet.

The satisfactory completion of the basic M.A. program will result in an endorsement for New York State Certification as a Teacher of ASL as a Foreign Language. They will be able to function within any of the educational agencies within the immediate local as well as the range of program options throughout the rest of the state and the nation.
