Basic Practicum in Conflict Resolution & Mediation
3 credits @ $1,127 per credit (plus special fee of $50)

This course is the first of six in a series leading to a Certificate of Attendance in Conflict Resolution, and provides experience in developing basic collaborative negotiation and mediation skills for interpersonal conflict in a variety of contexts.

This course is designed to address conflicts in the context of organizations from both theoretical and practical points of view. We will review the latest research findings about what causes conflict in organizations, how the issues are framed, how the conflicts are managed and how conflict impacts the parties involved and the organization as a whole.

This workshop presents a practical approach that uniquely integrates organizational development, alternative dispute resolution, and dispute system design principals into a working model to help assess conflict and evaluate processes within organizations.

Students will participate in two weekend workshops and conduct supervised community mediation. Following the workshop, students can elect to conduct supervised community mediation.

ORLJ 5016, 001:
Conflict and Complexity: A dynamical systems approach to addressing protracted conflict
1 credit or 3 credits @ $1,127 per credit
or non-credit @ $ 700 (first weekend only) or $1,690 (both weekends)
This course will develop the relevance of dynamical systems theory for understanding, investigating, and resolving protracted and seemingly intractable conflict at different levels of social reality (interpersonal, inter-group, international).  We will attempt to conceptualize conflicts as dynamic phenomena whose evolution reflects a complex interplay of factors operating at different levels and timescales.
This course may be taken for 1 credit (first weekend only) or 3 credits (both weekends)
