1) What are some major characteristics of the Program in Social Studies?
- NCATE-approved
- Preparation for New York State Certification (grades 7-12); Initial and Professional.
- Preparation to teach 7-12 grade Social Studies, History, and Economics (more?).
- Combines an emphasis on history and the social sciences with attention to curriculum and pedagogy.
- Opportunity for Intensive Summer Masters Program ( Social Studies Intensive Summer Teacher Education Program, INSTEP)
- Includes preparation for teaching in urban school settings.

32-point program

3) I do NOT have a teaching license. To which masters program should I apply?
38-point program

4) Do I need letters of reference to apply?
Yes, two are needed.

5) What is the deadline to apply to the program?
There is no deadline to apply. The program in Social Studies admits on a rolling basis.     http://www.tc.columbia.edu/admissions/
 
6) Where do I send my application materials?

7) Is the GRE required for the Program in Social Studies?
No.

8) What are typical class sizes?
Class sizes range from 8-20 students.

9) When do I start my student teaching?
Fall

10) What classes do I need to have in history before I can start the program?
You need to have 21 total credits in history by the start of the program. You should have 12 credits in World or American history before coming.

11) What courses would I typically take the first semester?
Before you can register for classes your first semester, you must meet with or speak to an advisor who will then give you the code to register. During your meeting, you will be advised on your course of study.

12)  When are classes held?
Classes are typically held in the evenings during the academic year.

13) I have received scholarship points towards my program starting in the Fall. Can I use the points for my summer classes prior to the fall?
No
 
14) What are the opportunities for financial aid, scholarships, or research assistant positions?
- You may be eligible for work-study. Please see the Financial Aid Office for further information.
- The college posts research assistant and other openings on the Human Resources website.
- Merit and need-based scholarships are available through the Program in Social Studies for new and continuing students.

15) I have other questions about teaching certification. Whom should I contact?
The Office of Teacher Education has the most up-to-date information about State certification.
16) How long does it take to complete the Program in Social Studies?
Depends on which Degree Program you are in. The 38 and 32 point MA’s typically take one academic year and two summer semesters for full-time students (approx. 4 courses per semester).

17) Will TC help me find a job when I am about to graduate?
Yes. The Career Services Center is available to you and they provide individual consultation.
