Gottesman Libraries
The Gottesman Library (Teachers College Library) contains one of the largest and richest collections of materials on the educational, psychological and health professions in the world. It consists of original documents, historical and contemporary textbooks, early catalogs and histories of academies, schools and colleges; administrative reports of school systems; surveys and curriculum guides. The collection is comprehensive in its coverage of academic disciplines and includes archives relevant to social studies education, such as the NCSS, Amherst Project in American History, and Citizenship Education Project archives. The rare books holdings include important collections of works on education dating from the 15th to 20th centuries, and the manuscript and archival collections cover a wide range of educational topics including personal papers and records of major professional organizations. The Inter library Loan Network (NSILL) and the Research Libraries Group (RLG) provide access to additional books, research and resource materials. In addition, a computer terminal at the Reference Desk provides access to the holdings of large research libraries nationwide through the Research Libraries Information Network (RLIN).
The Public Services Department of the Gottesman Library offers: Reference Services, Disabled Student Services, Periodical and MicrofilmCenter as well as Interlibrary Loan. The Department has compiled research guides for each of the Teachers College Departments and Programs, including Social Studies.
Computer Services are available through the Gottesman Library. The Library offers user-education programs to familiarize patrons with library services, facilities, resources and research techniques. Special classes to supplement those offered by programs of instruction, and targeted for specific populations such as doctoral or international students, form a regular part of the Library's instructional services. There is a charge for personalized computer searches and appointments must be made in advance by calling the Reference Department (212) 678-3494. A workshop on how and why to do a computerized literature search and Open House are offered each term. For more information call (212) 678-3068.
