Specific Degree Requirements
Prior to entering the program, applicants must complete at least 24 undergraduate and/or graduate credits in English, or their equivalent. The program looks for coursework across a range of literatures and content areas, including but not limited to: U.S./British/World Literature, Multicultural Literature, Genre Studies, Female Authors, Authors of Color, Adolescent Literature, Theory and Criticism, and Media Studies. We look carefully at undergraduate GPA, two letters of recommendation (one of which must be academic in nature), personal statement, and anything else that suggests a commitment to teaching and schooling. Applicants should indicate their recent experience with secondary school aged students in their personal statements.
Ed.M. applicants are required to submit a writing sample and two letters of recommendation. A third letter is encouraged. Also, applicants must have earned an M.A. in English, English Education, or in an analogous field, and must have at least three years of teaching experience at the secondary classroom level. A personal interview with faculty is required.
Ed.D., Ed.D.C.T, and Ph.D.
Applicants are required to have at least five years of classroom teaching experience and an M.A. in English, English Education or a closely related field. In addition to the general Teachers College admission requirements, applicants are required to submit a writing sample and one additional letter of recommendation. A personal interview session with faculty is also required.
