Master of Arts (32 points)
The Master of Arts degree program is designed to introduce educators and professionals with a wide variety of interests to the study of philosophy and education. It prepares students to critically assess and examine the purposes and designs of education. Graduates move on to work in schools, nonprofit institutions, policy advocacy groups and many other organizations.
| M.A. | Required |
Philosophy and Education | 12 points |
Educational Breadth (not in A&HF) | 6-9 points (3 courses of 2 or more points) |
Electives (no restriction) | 11-14 |
Total | 32 points |
The Masters of Arts (M.A.) option is for students with no previous graduate degree and who wish to study philosophy and education, perhaps as a way to deepen their liberal education and to enhance their qualifications for various positions in educational administration, teaching, foundation work, and so forth.
Students work with a faculty adviser, who will assist them in designing an appropriate course of study in light of their interests, background, and aspirations. In addition to the 12 points in Philosophy and Education courses, students may use their electives to develop an area of educational interest (e.g. educational policy, curriculum and teaching, developmental psychology) and to develop an area of philosophical interest (e.g. ethics, social philosophy, epistemology, etc.).
In addition to 32 points of coursework, the M.A. requires a culminating project to be designed in consultation with your advisor.
