Shilpi
Sinha is Assistant Professor at Adelphi University's Ruth S. Ammon School of
Education. She teaches courses in Philosophy and Education at both
undergraduate and graduate levels. Her recent research interests focus on
ethical encounters with otherness. Drawing upon various philosophical
traditions such as postmodernism, critical theory and hermeneutics, her focus
has been on conceptualizing what transformative learning aligned with an ethic
of care could look like and involve. Another research strand involves
understanding the issues at stake when multicultural education is linked to
questions and problems of unity. Her publications include the following: "Alterity in Habermas's Thought," African
Philosophy, 11,
no.2 (1998 November): 99-112;
Rasheed, S., & Sinha, S. "Demographics of Gender and Race," Aleman,
Ana M. Martinez and Kristen A. Renn, eds. Women in Higher Education: An
Encyclopedia. Santa Barbara, California: ABC-'"Clio,
2002; Book Review of An Existentialist Curriculum of Action, Educational Studies 43, no.3,
(2008): 273-277.
"The Philosophy and Education program at Teachers College provided an exceptional intellectually stimulating and nurturing environment. The excellent mentorship I received from the faculty and the creation of the space for sustained intellectual inquiry that straddled the sphere of philosophical questions in their own right, as well as their connections to issues of schooling, left an indelible impression on me, informing my own teaching today."
