Event Details: Using Technology in the Second/Foreign Language Class
Description: Participants will be actively engaged as they work with the different technology tools for language teaching and learning. The goal of this workshop is to help the participants refine their understanding of, and skills in, using the Internet for English language teaching. In this 5-hour workshop, Farah will demonstrate how technology can be integrated effectively (and painlessly) in an ESL or EFL class. Participants will be introduced to the concept of multi-literacy skills and a variety of different ways to foster such skills through technology tools for language learning. Various Social Media and Web 2.0 (synchronous and asynchronous) tools will be explored with particular focus on Wikis, Twitter, Skype, student blogging, and digital storytelling (e.g., VoiceThread). We will also explore the powerful collaboration tools in Google Apps. Participants will design technology-based and computer-mediated materials for their target student population.
Instructor: Farah S. Akbar has been a Teaching Fellow at the Community Language Programs (CLP) at Teachers College since Fall 2011. She has taught EFL in Pakistan and ESL in the U.S. In addition to teaching at the CLP, she teaches Introduction to Second Language Acquisition in the TESOL/AL Programs at Teachers College and has served as a peer-coach in the TESOL Summer Certificate Program.
