About Music Lessons

Music lessons are available on any instrument at any level. Teachers College applied music lessons are offered for credit only and they are available to all Columbia degree candidates. To sign up for applied music lessons, please fill out our pre-registration survey during the regular Teachers College registration period for each semester.

**The registration period for the Summer A is NOW CLOSED.  *The registration period for the Summer B semester is open until July 12th. To sign up please fill out this pre-registrationsurvey link available here: http://rio.tc.columbia.edu/surveys/musiced/index.cfm.

*Please note that depending on your internet browser you may need to cut and paste the link above into a separate window. The Music Education office will begin to process these pre-registration forms after June 4th.  The Music Education Office will send you an email once your pre-registration form has been processed. Please note that we are not yet processing forms for the Fall 2013 term.

Using the information you provide on the pre-registration survey, the Music Program will assign you to an instructor. Your instructor will then phone or email you to set up a class day, time, and place.
You receive 10 hours of lesson time per semester for 2 credits at Teachers College.You and your instructor will decide how to divide the time (i.e., how long each lesson will last) and how often you will meet. (Most meet on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.)

Applied Music Lesson Policies for Columbia Schools

  • The School of Continuing Education: Students may take applied music instruction provided they are registered in at least one course with School of Continuing Education. Please register in Kent Hall.
  • Columbia College: Students must visit the Dean's office in Hamilton Hall and sign a form stating that they accept  responsibility for payment. The Dean also signs this form. Students should bring the signed form to Kent Hall to register.
  • Barnard College, College of Physicians and Surgeons (Medical School), Law School and School of Journalism: Students must complete the "Special Approval Form for Cross Registration" in their respective Dean's office. This form must then be presented to their respective registrar for cross registration. 
  • Students at the following schools are not permitted to take applied music lessons through Teachers College at this time: School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) Graduate School of Arts & Sciences (GSAS) Graduate School of Business (GSB) Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP).
