Admissions : Admission Requirements

Columbia main gates

The application form can be found in the back of the Teachers College catalog and on the Web at the Office of Admissions homepage. Please read carefully and pay particular attention to items 1 to 6 below. Note: On Part I of the Application for Admission form, the program title is "Arts Administration," there is no specialization, and our code is 'AADM.'

Make sure you include the following items in your completed application:

  1. A personal statement of 750-1000 words indicating why you wish to pursue a career in arts administration, what led you to this point, and what makes you a good candidate for admission to the Program and to the field.
  2. A brief description or resume of formal or informal training in the arts and of work and volunteer experience.
  3. Three letters of recommendation, two from people who have some knowledge of your professional capacities, preferably in the arts.
  4. Scores on the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) are required by the deadline for which you are applying. The assigned institution code for Teachers College is 2905. Please leave the department code blank.
  5. Other requirements of Teachers College apply, including an official transcript from each college or institution you have attended, the application form, the nonrefundable application fee, and the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for all applicants whose native language is not English. Applicants who have earned a bachelors degree in an English-speaking country may request an exemption from this requirement. Students in the New York City area may substitute the English Certification Test (ECT) administered by Columbia University’s American Language Program. Please email alp@columbia.edu for more testing schedule and information. We prefer scores of at least 600 on TOEFL or level 10 on Columbia's ECT.

  6. An interview is required for finalists and may occur at any time in the application process.

You are advised to get your application in as soon as possible.
