The Program : Student Profile

College walk on the columbia university campus

Students who come to the Columbia program have several things in common – they have reached a good professional level and want to reach a higher one, they do a number of things well and need a catalyst to bring these together.

The factors that help students achieve these goals:

  • The quality of the faculty
  • The quality of the students
  • The full-time commitment of the Program

Although most students work part-time while attending the Program, and classes are arranged to permit flexibility, committed study with a cohort of 25-30 carefully selected candidates provides the kind of academic and professional rigor to create new leaders in the field.

Common characteristics include:

  • Average age – 29
  • Five years of relevant experience in an arts or arts-related institution – as a manager, an administrator, a volunteer or an artist
  • The ability to think and write critically
  • A deep concern for the social responsibility of the arts, the arts in society and education in the broadest sense – of audiences, artists, patrons, board members, colleagues, teachers and children
  • A passion for serving the arts

"My fellow students were one of the best sources of professional and personal support
I could have hoped for - diverse, challenging, and caring
."

                            – Thomas Channell (’06), Vice President and European Representative,
