EPSA Launch

EPSA, launched in 2011, in response to faculty and student desires for a more comprehensive approach to studying education issues and policies, brought together existing programs in Economics & Education, Politics & Education, Sociology and Education, and sparked the creation of a new interdisciplinary program in Education Policy.

Our Focus

We focus on how governments, markets, and societal conditions shape schooling and the broader enterprise of creating a population that is informed about the challenges and opportunities it confronts, able to critically analyze its needs and interests, and prepared to work together to make a better world.

EPSA Events

A panel of state and national leaders and EPSA faculty discuss proposals to ensure comprehensive educational services, like early education, expanded learning time, health services, and family support, for all students from poverty backgrounds at a conference convened by the Campaign for Educational Equity, an EPSA affiliate, in October 2011.

EPSA Courses

The Federal Policy Institute examines historical and current debates over federal educational policy-making through a week-long institute in Washington, D.C. linked with follow-up sessions at Teachers College. Understanding the realities of federal policy construction and implementation is essential both for educational leaders and all who hope to improve the nature of American education. Students are able to combine policy theory and experience with individuals who make and influence federal educational policy.

  • Welcome Message from Our Chair

    Dear Current and Prospective Students, Faculty, and Alumni,

    If curriculum and classroom teaching are the meat and potatoes of schooling, education policy is the supply line that determines whether the basic ingredients are available, affordable, fresh, and of high quality. The faculty and programs that have come together in Teachers College's newest unit, the Department of Education Policy and Social Analysis (EPSA) focus on how governments, markets, and societal conditions shape schooling and the broader enterprise of creating a population that is informed about the challenges and opportunities it confronts, able to critically analyze its needs and interests, and prepared to work together to make a better world.

  • EPSA Alumnae Speak at Reception for Admitted Students

  • EPSA extends warm thanks to alumnae, Dana Leon-Guerrero (Sociology & Education, 2010) and Lauren McDade (Politics & Education, 2013), who were featured speakers at TC's Washington DC Admit Reception on Wednesday, April 2. The reception, sponsored by the Office of Admission, allowed newly admitted students to meet with TC alumni and learn more about their academic and professional experiences.

  • In a new policy brief, Amy Stuart Wells writes that so-called "colorblind" educational policies work against diverse public schools.

  • The Trouble with "Teacher Voice" by Jonathan Gyourko

  • Jonathan Gyurko received his Ph.D.in Education and Politics in 2012 from Teachers College Columbia University, where he serves as an adjunct assistant professor. He also runs Leeds Global Partners, an education consultancy. The article, published in the Spring 2014 edition of the Politics of Education Association Bulletin, draws on his dissertation research titled "Teacher Voice."
