STEPS Research Positions Available for Students

STEPS to Literacy: A Digital Writing Space for English Language Learners

 

Graduate Student Positions Available

 

STEPS to Literacy is a 3-year IES-funded research project, which will develop a technology-based intervention with a curricular approach to support and increase Latino adolescents’ academic writing attainment in English. This intervention seeks to improve the writing of English Language Learners (ELLs), who are emergent bilinguals, through multimodal, web-based software based on an anchored instruction/situated model that incorporates the best knowledge about teaching writing and the ELL adolescent population (read more on the Center for Multiple Languages and Literacies Website: http://www.tc.edu/centers/cmll/new/index.html or on the CCTE Website: http://www.tc.edu/mst/CCTE/). The principal Investigators are Professors Jo Anne Kleifgen and Charles Kinzer.

Job Descriptions

 

Persons applying for one of the positions described below should possess skills in one or more of the following areas:  instructional technology, multimedia development, instructional development, video technology, Spanish-English translation and transcription of data, web design, programming, qualitative and/or quantitative methods, literacy curriculum and instruction, instruction with ELLs.

 

Doctoral Level Only

Doctoral Research Fellow-I, 25 hours/week for 12 months (September 1, 2009 - August 31, 2010; renewable). Compensation: $20,000 salary and up to 24 points tuition per year

The STEPS project seeks a Doctoral Research Fellow with programming and interface design experience to produce an iterative interface design, and plan and write provisional code. The Fellow will assist the programmer in web-design and programming tasks, and will also collaborate with other members of the STEPS team and ELL teachers/students from NYC public middle schools to assess the developing STEPS software and content. Prior ELL research and/or teaching experience and facility with spoken and written Spanish desired.

The Fellow’s tasks will include the following:

·        Participate in weekly team meetings for planning and review of ongoing work

·        Conduct a survey of existing CALL software

·        Obtain the latest programming/interface design materials

·        Produce iterative interface design (working with consultants)

·        Plan and write provisional code (in consultation with the programmer)

·        Assist the team and ELL teachers in assessing software and content

·        Assist with writing instructional manuals for the interface

·        Assist the co-PIs in collecting and analyzing formative data

·        Assist the co-PIs with report writing and dissemination activities

·        Assist with on- and off-site meetings and with office-related tasks

 

Doctoral Level Only

Doctoral Research Fellow-II, 25 hours/week for 12 months (September 1, 2009 - August 31, 2010; renewable). Compensation: $20,000 salary and up to 24 points tuition per year

The STEPS to Literacy project seeks a Doctoral Research Fellow to implement effective instructional principles for use in the STEPS curriculum development. The Fellow should have fluency in spoken and written Spanish for translation of content and transcription of data, demonstrate knowledge in the field of language/literacy, and possess advanced research and writing skills.  The Fellow will work with other members of the STEPS team and public school ELL teachers and students to develop and assess bilingual Spanish-English curricular content for STEPS software. Some background in technology applications desired.

The Fellow’s tasks will include the following:

·        Participate in weekly team meetings for planning and review of ongoing work

·        Review research literature on ELL language and literacy

·        Review research literature on effective interventions for ELL students

·        Write curricular content for the STEPS system

·        Translate and transcribe English¬®Spanish material as needed

·        Assist the team and ELL teachers in assessing software and content

·        Assist with writing instructional manuals for the interface

·        Assist the co-PIs in collecting and analyzing formative data

·        Assist the co-PIs with report writing and dissemination activities

·        Assist with on- and off-site meetings and with office-related tasks

 

 

Doctoral or Masters Level

Graduate Assistant (1 or 2 lines), 15 hours/week for 10 months (September 1-June 30; renewable) Salary: $8,750 and up to 6 points tuition per 10-month period.

The STEPS project seeks a Graduate Assistant (GA) to implement effective instructional principles for use in the STEPS curriculum development.  The GA should possess advanced research and writing skills.  The GA will work with other members of the STEPS team and public school ELL teachers and students to develop and assess bilingual Spanish-English curricular content for STEPS software. Fluency in spoken and written Spanish for translation of content and transcription of data desired. Some background in technology applications desired.

The GA’s tasks will include the following:
