Event Details: Colloquium: Leadership, Learning, and Experience

Description:

Date: Monday, June 3rd 2013 from 7pm- 9pm Location: 281 GD, Teachers College

Join us for an engaging panel discussion on the intersection between leadership, learning and experience! Learning to become a better leader cannot occur through reading and study alone. Leadership development is a lived experience involving the whole person, including multiple ways of knowing such as thoughts, feelings, intuition, images and sounds. A key question for both educators and students is how to more fully integrate the richness of lived experience into the process of learning to become a better leader.

We have several distinguished speakers who will be sharing various perspectives on the critical role of life experience in leadership development.

Adam Bryant from the New York Times will be sharing insights from the many interviews he has conducted with CEOs as part of his weekly column and best-selling book The Corner Office.

Dr. Michel Alhadeff-Jones will be discussing the biographical approach to leadership development and the use of life history to promote critical self-reflection, complex ways of thinking, and transformative learning.

Dr. Dorothy Marcic will talk about the work she has done around music, theater and leadership, discussing her research around understanding how women are depicted in popular music, the evolution of relationships through music, and the development of power in African-American women’s music.

Dr. Terrance Maltbia will share his work around leveraging diversity and strategic learning, discussing the connection between experience, learning, and competence.

Dr. Zachary Van Rossum will host the panel.

Refreshments will be served!
