  • Antil, Fred
    Fred Antil was in the first AEGIS cohort (M.A. '84, Ed.D. '86, Higher and Adult Education).  Before coming to Teachers College, Fred earned his Bachelor of Science from Cornell University. He then spent three years as a Marine Corps Officer.  Fred spent most of his professional life in Human Resource Development.  He has held senior positions at Marriott, other companies, and several large trade associations.  Fred also earned  a Master of Science in Organizational Development from George Washington University.  He was a VP of the American Management Association when he discovered AEGIS.  His advisor, Dr. Mezirow, founded AEGIS.  While in the program he became Special Assistant to the Dean of Cornell's School of Hotel Administration.  Under Mezirow's guidance his dissertation, "Developing A Continuing Education Program For Executives In The Hospitality Industry" was perfect for his career assignment.  After retiring from Cornell, he taught part-time at Canisius College for five years.  For a decade Fred had a local radio show, interviewing interesting/informative people.  Fred now works with Cornell University, Ithaca College, and community organizations as a volunteer.   Years ago he began researching Lincoln and he has given frequent presentations about him, often attired as our 16th president.  Most recently Fred led a series of adult discussions of Lincoln's speeches under a grant from NYS Council for the Humanities.
  • Barto, Jody
    Jody is the founder and principal consultant for Jody Barto, Adult Learning Strategist & Coach, LLC. She designs and facilitates engaging, meaningful, and impactful professional development programs for corporate, non-profit, and higher education settings. Jody's college teaching experience focuses on the development of effective interpersonal, group, and written communication skills for the workplace. She currently serves as an Adjunct Professor at Manhattan College in the M.S. in Organizational Leadership Program, and at Fairleigh Dickinson University for the Petrocelli College of Continuing Studies. In addition to earning an Ed.D. in Adult Learning & Leadership at Teachers College, Jody also holds an M.Ed. in Adult & Organizational Development from Temple University, and a B.S. in Graphic Design Communication.   • Ciporen, Rachel
    Dr. Rachel Ciporen- As an executive coach and educator Rachel draws on over 15 years of experience in conflict resolution, leadership development and team building to help individuals and organizations maximize their potential. She works with executives across multiple industries and specializes in helping leaders stretch beyond their habitual thinking, relating and problem solving patterns. Rachel is a core faculty member in the Columbia Coaching Certification Program and has been working in Columbia Business School's Emerging Leaders, Senior Executive, High Impact Leadership, Personal and Social Intelligence, and Not-for-Profit Management programs since 2004.  Rachel received her bachelor's degree in Peace and Global Studies from Earlham College, and completed her Masters Degree in Organizational Psychology at Teachers College prior to entering the Adult Learning and Leadership Doctoral Program.  Rachel also completed a certificate program in Organizational Development at the Gestalt OSD Center where she is currently on the Board of Directors.  Rachel's research interests include executive education and coaching, transformative learning and learning transfer.  Her dissertation "The Role of Personally Transformative Learning in Leadership Development" won The American Society of Training and Development's Dissertation of the Year Award in 2008.  Her work has been published in The Academy of Management Learning and Education, The Journal of Leadership and Organizational Studies, and in the edited series University and Corporate Innovations in Lifetime Learning.
  • Patricia W. De Barbieri
    Dr. Patricia De Barbieri is a licensed professional counselor with 42 years of experience in education.  She began her career as a high school vocational education teacher, kindergarten and pre-school teacher, and elementary school counselor in a public school settings.  She has experience working in public and private education, not for profit social service agencies, private practice and institutions of higher education. Her work in higher education began as adjunct instructor at Gateway Community Technical College, Albertus Magnus College, and Sacred Heart University. She served for 10 years as university student mental health counselor and director of a university mental health counseling center. It was during these experiences that her professional interest in eating disorders began.  She is a past member of the NCAA Speakers Bureau and has visited colleges and universities throughout the U S consulting with student athletes, coaches and athletic department administrators around support for athletes with eating disorders. Dr. De Barbieri is Professor of Marriage and Family Therapy and former Chair of the Department of Counseling and School Psychology  at Southern Connecticut State University. She served as Coordinator of the graduate program in School Counseling for 10 years prior to becoming Department Chair. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the State University of New York at Oneonta in Child Development and Family Relations and a Master of Science degree in Counselor Education from Southern Connecticut State University.  The benefits of her doctoral studies at TC are endless, but most importantly are the concepts of reflection and transformation in learning which inform her work as an educator on a daily basis. Her dissertation topic is; The Role of Learning in Recover from Bulimia.
  • Jester, Michellana
    Michellana Y. Jester, Lecturer and Manager of MIT Sloan School of Management's Action Learning Program, began her career as a strategic management consultant before she began working in higher education. As a consultant for more than a decade, Dr. Jester worked for private corporations, non-profit organizations, and public agency clients to strategically solve organizational challenges. Her consulting engagements specialized in leadership development, organizational change, and team building. In her current role at MIT Sloan, Dr. Jester draws from her private and non-profit sector experience to assist MBA and other graduate students link theoretical management concepts to real world business challenges. As the Manager of Sloan's Action Learning Program, she is responsible for leading the design and delivery of project based courses and recruiting host company partnerships that align with the program's goals. Dr. Jester develops, supports, and assesses program learning objectives, as well as the transfer of learning among multiple stakeholders including faculty, students, and host companies. Dr. Jester received her doctorate degree from Teachers College Columbia University where her research focus was adult learning and leadership. Her dissertation, entitled "When and Where I Enter: A Case Study of Preservice Teachers Preparing to Teach in Culturally Diverse Educational Settings", explored the impact of reflective practice on teaching perspectives. Her study incorporated tools she developed to enhance and examine reflection. Dr. Jester also holds a masters degree in Public Policy from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government where her study focus was group dynamics, leadership, and economics; and a bachelors degree in Sociology and Anthropology from Mills College.
  • Macaulay, Barbara A.
    Barbara A. Macaulay currently serves as the Associate Provost for Online Education/CEO of MCPHS Online at the Mass College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences, overseeing the development and implementation of online health care programs.  She spent some 28 years in the public higher education arena at both the community college and university levels, engaged in various aspects of adult and continuing education.  Her last position was as Associate Vice President and Chief Academic Officer for UMass Online.  She also taught graduate courses in adult and continuing education at several colleges in Massachusetts, as well as at Teachers College and was a doctoral advisor for the AEGIS Program for several years.  In addition to earning an Ed.D. and MA at Teachers College, she holds an M.Ed. from Worcester State University and a B.S. from Springfield College.  The research interests were and are strongly tied to adult learning in various settings and venues; needless to say, she has been well served by this area of interest/expertise in online education where adult learning practices must be carefully integrated into online program and course delivery, as well as faculty preparation.
  • Mankey, Richanne C.
    Richanne C. Mankey is Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students at Daemen College in Amherst, New York.  Richanne's career as an organizational leader in independent higher education spans two and one-half decades; she has been a Senior Student Affairs Officer since 1996.  Her master's degree is in Social Agency Counseling from the University of Dayton (Ohio, 1997), and her bachelor's degree is in Psychology from Ohio Northern University (Ohio, 1982).  In addition to her administrative duties, Richanne teaches in the Executive Leadership and Change masters program at Daemen College—she teaches research and transformational leadership.  In leadership, her intention is to promote leading from the heart with humans at the center of holistic and collaborative decision-making.  Richanne was inspired to pursue her doctorate in this program because she wanted to better understand how to promote holistic learning in students.  She knew the excellent reputation of the faculty in the AEGIS program would promote her own learning, thinking, and intuiting to enhance her practice as a student affairs professional who advances learning for life by helping student synthesize classroom and outside-of-classroom lessons.
  • Scott, Leodis
    Leodis Scott, LearnLong, Founder & Learning Strategist with a focus on advancing education and learning within institutions and communities. Over 15 years serving learners in the military, corporate, nonprofit and academic fields: Research includes experiential learning, community engagement, and educational philosophy. BA: Economics; Philosophy: University of Illinois at Chicago MA: Adult Education: DePaul University School for New Learning Leodis came to the Adult Learning and Leadership program to learn alongside a diverse and dedicated group of educational leaders within our emerging field of adult learning and continuing education. Leodis came to this school to experience the legacy of Teachers College by learning its renowned history, traditions, and practices of service.
  • Turkowitz, Alysa
    Alysa Turkowitz is a recent Ed.D. graduate from the Adult Learning and Leadership Department. Her research interests and dissertation focus is on the experience of marginalized students within higher education settings and creating equitable educational opportunities. She is also the Associate Director of Educational Affairs for the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University. In this role she supports faculty and graduate students on their educational journey including but not limited to providing curricular and pedagogical support, educational programming and academic advising. Alysa's background includes experience in training and development, leadership development, talent management and planning, and career advising. Alysa received her MA at Teachers College in Social and Organizational Psychology. The ALL Program's impressive faculty, collegial atmosphere and overall passion and commitment to adult learners helped make TC the obvious choice for her degree program.
  • Welch IV, John C.
    Johnny welch leadership lessons from the legends of leadership John Carrington Welch IV, Ed.D., M.T.S., M.B.A. is a speaker, author and entrepreneur. He is currently the Managing Director of Revolutionary Leaders—a leadership development organization dedicated to developing change leaders in public, private and political organizations. Johnny's broad experience ranges from serving as the program manager for the Columbia Coaching Certification Program, to corporate training—with clients that have included Burke Rehabilitation Hospital, Kawasaki, and New York Presbyterian Hospital, the University Hospital of Columbia and Cornell—to teaching undergraduate and graduate business courses at Chapman University in Southern California. He has also been intimately involved with coaching leadership teams in large ministries to serving in the offices of members of the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate. Johnny earned a master's degree in business administration from San Diego State University and a master's degree in ethics and public management from Harvard. The main drivers that brought Johnny from California to this program include the exceptional reputation of the faculty and school and a deep conviction in the power of learning and change leadership to transform people, organizations, and democratic societies as whole.
  • Wetzler, Jeff
    Jeff Wetzler is Executive Vice President and Chief Learning Officer at Teach For America. Currently, Jeff co-leads the national function accountable for the performance of approx. 8,000 teachers and 1000+ full- and part-time staff members. He directly oversees teams who: design and develop the training and ongoing support for TFA's teachers and the staff who train and supervise them; run asocial-networking website to enable online learning and knowledge-sharing; measure performance and drive ongoing innovation to the program; and conduct long-term research to identify the top drivers of teacher performance and improvement. Jeff joined Teach For America after working at Monitor Group, an international consulting firm, where he developed and led client engagements to advise executives on a range of strategic, organizational, and leadership issues. While at Monitor, Wetzler also led new product development initiatives and managed global training in the area of interpersonal effectiveness. Jeff currently serves on the board of Rocketship Education, as vice chair on the founding board of three Leadership Prep charter elementary schools in Brooklyn, and as an advisor to several education start-ups. He earned a B.S. in psychology from Brown University; while at Brown, Jeff cofounded Providence Science Outreach, a nonprofit organization that equips university students to use hands-on projects to get kids in under-resourced schools excited about science. Jeff earned an adult learning and leadership from Teachers College, Columbia University, where he pursued a doctorate to advance his understanding of theory and connect it to his day-to-day practice.


  • Sean Conley

    Sean Conley is Associate Dean for Marlboro College Graduate School in Brattleboro, Vermont, where he directs several graduate programs and teaches. For the last decade his focus has been on the intersection of technology and adult learning, examining the challenge of the digital divide, technology in the developing world, the open source software movement and the role of experiential learning and reflection in on-line and blended programs.
