Scholarly Interests

Dr. Cohen’s current research and practice interests include: strategies for preventing destructive conflict using a Participatory Action Research (PAR) paradigm with formerly incarcerated men and women; participatory case studies of conflict resolution systems in collaborative environments; the use of narrative to create qualitative models of conflict engagement and the impact of reflective practices on mediator efficacy.

She has spearheaded a multiyear collaboration with the Fortune Society, a community-based organization that provides services to justice involved individuals.  They hope to present their collaborative work at the 2014 International Society for Justice Research conference in NYC, an event co-sponsored by the MD-ICCCR.

Her most recent publications include a chapter in the upcoming 3rd edition of the Handbook of Conflict Resolution (Deutsch, Coleman & Marcus) on the PAR work on preventing destructive conflict with formerly incarcerated individuals (with Neshkes, Pryce-Screen, Hernandez, Linder and Doherty-Baker) and an article on mediator style and self and other perception perceptions of efficacy in the Conflict Resolution Quarterly (with Kressel, Butts and Reich), also summarized in Negotiation Journal.

biographical information

Claudia E. Cohen is a Senior Lecturer in the Social-Organizational Program at Teachers College and has been the Associate Director of the ICCCR since 2008.  As a scholar-practitioner of conflict studies, her career has combined research, practice and teaching in a range of settings.

Dr. Cohen’s current research interests include: strategies for preventing destructive conflict using a Participatory Action Research (PAR) paradigm with formerly incarcerated men and women; participatory case studies of conflict resolution systems in collaborative environments; the use of narrative to create qualitative models of conflict engagement and the impact of reflective practices on mediator efficacy.

Dr. Cohen teaches Managing Conflict in Organizations.  The course promotes a scholar-practitioner model.  Foundational theories in cooperation and conflict resolution provide a scaffold for the experiential learning and reflective practice.  Students are supported in making the connection between their classroom learnings and their past and future professional experiences.

Dr. Cohen served as an employee ombudsman at a Fortune 50 corporation.   She has worked as an internal and external consultant offering organization change support, executive coaching, conflict management and leadership development to both corporate and not-for-profit clients.  Dr. Cohen has mediated for the municipal and civil court systems in NJ and the Philadelphia-area EEOC since 2005.  She specializes in employment cases.

Dr. Cohen was previously on faculty at Rutgers University and at Stevens Institute of Technology, teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses in psychology, conflict resolution, emotional intelligence, leadership and organizational change.
