Video Conferencing

There are three IP video conferencing solutions available at the college, Skype, Polycom and Adobe Connect. Each option has specific features that enable a collaborative distance learning environment for its users. Media Services provides webcams and USB boundary mics at the 149HM Helpdesk for all three solutions. If you plan to use Adobe Connect please contact Academic Computing Services at x3302 so that they can set-up an account for your use.

Click on Skype icon for download

The Skype option is completely free and requires no technical support from Media Services. It offers simple plug and play features, just connect your webcam and microphone to the USB ports on the console or Smart Boards, click the Skype icon on the desktop, create your Skype account and off you go. Skype is ideal for one-on-one video conferencing.

Skype is a basic low resolution video call with limited data sharing capabilities. For a nominal fee Skype can offer multi-point video conferencing with up to 10 participants. Visit our offices at 149HM to arrange for your equipment needs.

Click on Polycom icon for download

Another option available is the Polycom Video Conferencing Platform. This option offers superior video/audio quality compared to Skype and has the additional features of  live data sharing and multi- point video conferencing. We have a Polycom HDX codex that can be placed anywhere in the college. TC users can also download the free 30-day laptop/desktop trail version of  the Polycom Real Presence software and then purchase it for about $75.

If your Polycom video conference requires assistance from Media Services then you must contract a Media Services Tech for support. There is a 3 hour minimum for technical support.

Adobe Connect

The third option is Adobe Connect which is based on Flash technology and is supported by virtually all internet- connected devices. This service offers a complete web-conferencing solution that can potentially increase attendance, boost response rates, and generate interest through rich and engaging, highly interactive online events.

For assistance on Adobe Connect call Angelo Miranda at x3359.
