Appendix C: Extra Muros Route to the Dissertation

At any time within ten years from the date of the award of the Master of Philosophy degree (M.Phil.), a recipient of the degree who has not continued formal studies at Teachers College may present, in lieu of a sponsored dissertation, a body of independent and original published scholarly material in partial fulfillment of the dissertation requirement for the Ph.D. degree.

An applicant who wishes to present material prepared extra muros should submit a petition accompanied by such material, to the Director of the Office of Doctoral Studies. The material submitted will then be reviewed by the Director and by the Dean of The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) of Columbia University in consultation with appropriate departments. If this preliminary screening is favorable, the Director and the Dean will appoint a Faculty Review Committee to act upon the petition and to make recommendation on the applicant's eligibility to sit for a final oral examination. The Subcommittee on the Ph.D. Degree in Teachers College will nominate an examining committee of at least seven members, to be approved by the Dean of The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, of which four will be Ph.D. sponsors from the Teachers College faculty and at least three will be Columbia University faculty members.

At the discretion of the Faculty Review Committee, the applicant may be requested to participate in an informal, preliminary oral examination. The Committee will present its report, giving both minority and majority opinions, to the Director of the Office of Doctoral Studies and to the Dean of The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

An applicant, before proceeding to final defense, will be responsible for payment of the Teachers College Continuous Dissertation Advisement Fee (Dept. Code & 8900) for the term in which the scholarly materials are submitted and the term in which the final oral defense is held. This fee is set at the rate of three points of the current tuition per point.

The final oral defense examination may be taken only once and it is either passed or failed.
