Planning a Job Search

The following information is designed to provide resources for continuing F-1 and J-1 students who are thinking about searching for employment, whether on-campus employment during studies, short-term internships, or post-completion career options. Please remember that you should always check with the OISS regarding employment authorization regulations and requirements - not every job or employment situation can be authorized. Do not apply for or accept a job offer without first determining your eligibility to work.

Note: The OISS is attempting to update and expand this section to benefit all students interested in pursuing employment options. Please feel free to share your experiences and information with other students by e-mailing us at tcintl@tc.columbia.edu

Before You Begin

Before beginning any type of employment search, it is important to formulate a plan by taking into account the following points in mind:

  • Immigration regulations and restrictions on employment: what are you permitted and not permitted under immigration rules?
  • Commitments on your time: what other obligations do you have on your time, such as academics, personal / family commitments, extracurricular activities, etc.?
  • Your employment background and skills: do you have a sense of your specific strengths and qualifications cations as a possible employee?
  • Your job history: do you have an official resume or employment history prepared and ready to provide any prospective employers?
