Dean’s Grant for Student Research

Teachers College continues its tradition of supporting student research through the Dean’s Grant for Student Research program. Awards of up to $2,000 will be made to students who submit the strongest proposals for research that have educational implications for the field and for the academic program at Teachers College.  The number of grants given is dependent upon annual funding; in past years, between five and eight grants have been awarded. Matriculated Teachers College students (M.A., M.S., Ed.M., or Doctoral) are eligible to apply for the grant.

All applicants are invited to present their research proposal at a Poster Session that will be held onWednesday, April 9, 2014 from 4 – 5pm in the Everett Lounge where you may present your research proposal.   This session will be attended by members of the community and will be a time for you to share your ideas with student colleagues, administrators, and faculty. 

Students may apply for grants of up to $2,000 for the research period ending prior to August 31, 2014.   Students who have already been awarded this grant may not apply for another.  Students who have already applied and not been awarded this grant may apply.  Students may apply together under one proposal but the maximum budget remains at $2,000.

Completed applications must be received by Friday, March 28, 2014 at 5pm (no exceptions). More information regarding the application process will be sent out in late January.

Proposals should be concise, no more than ten double-spaced pages (not including cover page, abstract, bibliography and instruments), and should include the following sections in the order that has been outlined below.  Proposals over ten pages will not be accepted and ask that the instructions below be followed carefully; please DO NOT simply submit chapter one of your dissertation instead of following the directions below. 

·         Cover page

·         Abstract (one page or less, separate from the body of the proposal)

·         Problem or topic/Rationale

·         Theoretical/Conceptual framework

·    Detailed plan of work or research design, including research questions, instruments and measures to be used, subject selection, data collection and analysis

·         Indication of academic progress to this point & detailed time schedule for planned work

·         Anticipated results & implications for practice

·        Proposed budget not to exceed $2,000 (funds may not be used for major equipment, tuition, to pay another student/researcher, to reimburse past expenses, or for travel expenses not specifically for the purpose of data collection)



·         Curriculum Vita 

·    Identification of other sources of funding for this project including a listing of other grant programs that the project proposal has been submitted to for funding. 

·    Recommendation from either your research sponsor or your Teachers College academic advisor.

Research Dissertation Fellowship

Awards of $6,000 are provided to supplement academically related tuition, living, research, or travel expenses.  Fellowships are available only to matriculated Teachers College doctoral students who are on track to receive dissertation proposal approval by May 31, 2014.  Recipients of the fellowship may be asked to present their research. 

Completed applications must be received by Friday, February 28, 2014 at 5pm (no exceptions). More information regarding the application process will be sent out in late January.

Dissertation Research Fellowship applicants pursue basic and applied research spanning diverse disciplines.  This research should concentrate on advancing knowledge and show a strong likelihood of being accepted in the most well-respected research journals in the field of inquiry. The award of $6,000 is applied to a student’s account at Teachers College after the College’s drop/add period in two installments of $3,000 (one in the Fall and the other in the Spring) only to those Fellows who are registered in the semester in which the $3,000 is to be applied.   

Applications must include 1) letter of support in a signed, sealed envelope from a faculty member familiar with the applicant’s work, 2) an official TC transcript and 3) curriculum vitae.

·         The social and intellectual significance of the research work

  • ·         Explicit statement that gives evidence of clear conceptualization, and a grounding in theory and prior research experience
  • ·         An integrated research framework, question, and methodology
  • ·         Documentation of feasibility of completing the research study in a timely fashion;
  • ·         Evidence of research capability (e.g., combination of prior research experience, coursework, field experience, training, mentoring)
  • ·         A plan for dissemination and publication
  • ·         References

Southern Education Foundation Higher Education Doctoral Internship 

The Southern Education Foundation (SEF), located in Atlanta, GA seeks an outstanding doctoral student intern for the summer of 2014. Students pursuing doctoral degrees in higher education or related fields are invited to apply. This opportunity is intended to expose promising graduate students to career opportunities in the non-profit highereducation sector while gaining experience that compliments a program of study. 

For more than 145 years SEF has made outsized contributions to improving education at all levels, from pre-kindergarten through higher education. SEF works to improve equity, excellence, and opportunity in education nationally. Research, policy analysis, advocacy, and programs are the primary means through which SEF pursues its mission. 

The doctoral intern will work to assist the development of SEF’s higher education programs and related research projects. Primary areas of focus for this summer include improving capacity of Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs) to conduct systematic assessments of student learning, improving developmental education, and academic program innovation at MSIs. Students interested in this opportunity should have working knowledge and genuine interest in Minority-Serving Institutions and the students most likely to attend them. 

The internship begins May 26, 2014 and ends August 1, 2014. SEF will offer a stipend of $4,500 and a reimbursement for travel to Atlanta. Prospective students must be enrolled in a graduate program having completed at least 24 credit hours and submit: 1) a letter of interest describing professional goals; 2) two letters of recommendation from program faculty and; 3) a copy of all postsecondary transcripts.
