Here are some local organizations with volunteer opportunities:

  • Chess in the Schools
    Seeking tutors in all subjects to work with our students on Mon, Tues, or Wed from 4:30-6:30.

    Chess in the Schools is a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to improving academic performance and building self-esteem among inner-city public school children.  Tutors will work with high school students in the after school College Bound program one afternoon per week from 4:30-6:30 to help improve their study habits and grades.

  • Everybody Wins! NY
    Everybody Wins! New York pairs caring adult mentors with children in local elementary schools
    for weekly reading and mentoring. Volunteers commit to reading with the same child for one
    hour every week or every other week throughout the school year.

    As a result of the friendships they build with their “reading partners,” kids learn to love reading,
    their literacy skills improve, and their self-confidence grows. Their lives are changed forever.

    Learning Leaders, the nation's oldest and largest school volunteer program, is currently recruiting for 7th grade math tutors in MS 324 to prepare them for their state examinations. Volunteers are needed on Saturdays from 10am – 1pm. Two training sessions are required.

    We are a non-profit tutoring center that serves children in grades 2-12. The children are from low-income families and can't afford private tutoring. You will be matched one-to-one with a student for the school year. You will be tutoring the student in the academic areas that you are most comfortable with.     Help squash barriers to academic success! One of the most important components of our program is the weekly homework assistance our students receive. Our volunteers are vital to the success of this program as they provide individual attention to our students and help with their evening assignments. Volunteers work with 1-2 6th-12th grade students at a time on their assigned homework under the supervision of our academic directors.

    Student Sponsor Partners

    SSP gives underserved New York City students the opportunity to receive a college-preparatory education by providing them with a four-year adult mentor and a tuition stipend to attend a non-public high school.Mentors are asked to meet with their students 4-6 times a year, and maintain monthly contact by phone or email.  SSP organizes events throughout the school year that mentors and students may attend together, or mentors may meet with students on their own – the commitment is flexible.

    Teen Action

    As part of the Young Men’s Initiative, the 25 Cornerstone programs located in the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) community centers will include mentoring activity as part of their programs. Mentors will support youth in fifth through ninth grades during the transitions from elementary to middle school and middle school to high school by cultivating positive personal relationships and community involvement.
