SARA GOMEZ: AN AFRO-CUBAN FILMMAKER

Not much is known about Afro-Latina filmmakers. Sara Gomez the Afro-Cuban filmmaker was one of the pioneers.

Alessandra Muller's portray of Sara Gomez in Sara Gomez: An Afro- Cuban Filmmaker is a rich, multilayered documentary about one of the most important Afro-Latina filmmakers.

The documentary shows segments of some of Sara Gomez's films including Guanabacoa: Crónica de mi familia and her landmark film De Cierta Manera and explores how and why she was so interested in exploring the life of women, the Afro-Cuban and of the marginal in revolutionary Cuba.

In addition to archival footage of her works, the documentary features interviews with Afro-Cuban filmmaker Gloria Rolando, poet Tomas Gutierrez, her children, her husband Germinal Hernandez, cast members of her film De Cierta Manera, and other colleagues, friends and family members.

TICKETS: FREE

DVDs of films from Africa and the African Diaspora will be on sale at the venue. $15 per DVD; $25 for 2 DVD; $35 for three DVD and $10 for each additional DVD.
