Fall craft series

This community-building event is your chance to pick up a new hobby, meet new people, and learn the basics of knitting or crocheting. No previous experience is required, although students with experience are encouraged to help others with the basics. This event is open to all members of the TC Community and registration is required. Further details and sign-up information coming soon!

Hispanic Heritage Month

The Coalition of Latino/a Scholars (CLS) is sponsoring a welcoming event and reception to kick off the Hispanic Heritage Month events. This event is open to all TC Community members. College Conversation Series:
An Evening with TC President Arthur Levine

As a part of the College Conversations Series from the Office of the President, Diversity and Community, TC President Arthur Levine will meet with students, faculty and staff members of the TC Community for an informal evening of food and dialogue. Mellon Scholars Colloquium Series: "Human Diversity and Pedagogy"

Vice Chancellor Sanford is Co-Chair of the Committee on Closing the Performance Gap in New York. Previously, she served as the Chair of the Regents' Committee on Low Performing Schools which produced the report "Perform and Perish" published by the New York State Education Department. Dr. Sanford has also served as Chair of the Committee on Higher Education and Chair of the Committee on the Professions. She was instrumental in the development of the concept of a Board of Education of People of African Ancestry and in the formulation of new educational policies affecting schools in New York State. Nationally, Regent Sanford serves on the Advisory Committee on Multicultural Education for the National Association of State Boards of Education and on the National Commission on African American Education. Vice Chancellor Sanford will be on campus as a Visiting Scholar supported by the Mellon Foundation on October 13, 2003. Members of the Teachers College community who wish to meet with her please call the Institute for Urban and Minority Education at 678-3444 to schedule an appointment.

The President's Grant for Diversity and Community Initiatives (DCI) is available to all recognized TC organizations and members of the TC community. The Grant provides financial support to projects, programs and events that benefit the entire TC community with the goal of spreading new and innovative ideas. As such, the Grant promotes interactive, inter-group communication, as well as collaborative and educational activities with an emphasis in community and/or diversity. TC welcomes jazz musician Dr. Billy Taylor for a master class, evening program and to receive a special award for his lifetime mission to create a meaningful liaison between the artistic and the teaching fields. Dr. Taylor will be joined by Dr. Bert Konowitz and SPIRIT Improv in a musical dialogue that is committed to celebrating the outstanding contributions of jazz to students around the world. Admission is free.

Thanksgiving at TC!

Taste a "traditional American" Thanksgiving meal complete with all the trimmings, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green beans, tossed salad, pumpkin pie, sweet potato pie and holiday beverages. There will also be special activities including games, raffle prizes, and karaoke. It is sure to be a very special event!

Tickets are $10 for adults and children over 12, $5 for children 6-12, and free for all children 5 and under. Tickets will be on sale starting Tuesday, November 4th in 128 Main Hall. This event is co-sponsored by the Office of Diversity and Community, the Office of Housing and Residence Life, and the Student Life Center.

College Conversation Series:
American Indian Voices*

As part of the College Conversations series from the Office of the President, Diversity and Community, a panel of educators and scholars will assemble to share their perspectives, experiences, and research related to contemporary American Indian issues. In addition, this is a kick-off event for the new student organization, the Columbia University American Indian Network (CAIN) housed at Teachers College. Admission is free and there will be a reception to follow.
