Doctor of Education (Ed.D.)

The Ed.D prepares students for positions in the Teaching and Supervision of Music in Elementary and Secondary Schools, the Teaching and Administration of Music in Early Childhood Settings, the Teaching of Music in Private Schools and Private Studios, the Teaching and Administration of Music in Colleges and Universities, and careers in Music and Interdisciplinary Areas, such as the Arts and Humanities,Special and Adult Education.

Curriculum Guide: Curriculum guides are based on the following curriculum profile

  • Curriculum Profile: Ed.D. (90 points minimum)
  • A maximum of 36 points of graduate coursework may be transferred, in consultation with your advisor.

1) Music and Music Education (36-42 points)

Required Areas of Study:

  • 5032 or 5033 Comprehensive Musicianship (3 points each)
  • 5020 Foundations of Music Education (3 points)
  • 5025, 5026, or 5047 Creative Strategies (3 points each)
  • 5022 Children's Musical Development (3 points)
  • 4029, 5029, or 4048 New Technology (3 points each or demonstrated proficiency)

Suggested Areas of Study:

  • Other TC Pedagogy classes including: Vocal Pedagogy, Designing Musical Experiences for Young Children, etc. (see Course Catalog for a complete listing of other classes including:Performance Pedagogy, Music Analysis, Music History, and others.)

2) Major Research Area (10-12 points)

Required Areas of Study:

  • 5031 Synthesizing Research in Music Education (2 points)
  • 6501 & 7501 Doctoral & Dissertation seminar (2 or 3 points each)
  • 5001 Research Methods in Arts Education (3 points)

Suggested Areas of Study:

  • 5003 Music perception and cognition (3 points)
  • 5002 Assessment Strategies for the Arts (0 or 3 points)

3) Applied Music (15-24 points)

Suggested Areas of Study:

  • Applied major
  • Ensemble
  • Chamber music
  • Performance literature
  • Conducting

4) Total of 15 points out of department classes required (6 points in non-major research courses)
