In April, the Department of Arts and Humanities will begin a new initiative titled “A&H Book Talks,” a series of talks featuring department faculty and their recent publications.
“Books represent a significant scholarly accomplishment, a chance for scholars to fully develop their thinking with a degree of freedom typically not possible in journal publications,” said William Gaudelli, Department Chair and Associate Professor of Social Studies and Education, who conceived and developed the series. “[A&H Book Talks] represents a chance for the faculty to go public with their work in a local context, as we often do not have the time to focus on the great insights our colleagues offer to the wider field.”
The department has opted for a more modern format for the book talks, which will include respondents from the greater New York City area to provide insights into each book’s topic. Further, the series is intended to provide a free, public forum in which scholars from TC and scholars and/or experts from the field will engage in conversations about scholarship and real-world practice.
“I see these as community events,” Gaudelli said. “Ones that will give us an opportunity to share collegially in each other’s successes, so hopefully colleagues will attend, scholars from nearby as well as students and the larger community.”
The series will launch on April 5, and feature Mary Hafeli, Professor of Art and Art Education, with Katie Morris, Maryland Institute College of Art, and Wendy Osterweil, Tyler School of Art at Temple University, responding to Hafeli’s book, Exploring Studio Materials: Teaching Creative Art Making to Children (Oxford University Press, 2014).
On April 21, Olga Hubard, Associate Professor of Art Education, will present her book, Art Museum Education: Facilitating Gallery Experiences (Palgrave Macmillan, 2015). Hubard’s respondents will include Education Directors from the Guggenheim, Met, and MoMA museums.
Both events are co-sponsored by Gottesman Libraries, which is also where the spring 2016 series will take place. Plans are already underway for the series to continue into the 2016-2017 academic year.
