Workshop: On-line methods in language and language learning research
Language researchers use on-line methods to tap into the moment-by-moment analysis of the input that takes place during comprehension and production. Focusing mainly on comprehension and grammatical processing, knowledge and acquisition, in this workshop, I will provide an introduction to the use of such methods (e.g., self-paced reading, lexical decision, cross-modal priming). The workshop will comprise three sessions. In the first session, the types of research questions that are addressed by use of time-sensitive techniques by language and language learning researchers will be covered, and I will relate the findings of some recent research to those gathered by more traditional, off-line methods (e.g., cloze tests, acceptability judegments). In the second part of the workshop, on-line data from a set of studies will be examined in detail. In the final session of the workshop, participants will have the chance to brainstorm ideas for new on-line studies, and these practical examples of potential on-line studies will be discussed as a group.
