Summer 2017 Workshops

Optional weekend workshops on TESOL topics are included as part of tuition for TESOL Certificate Program students. Some of these workshops are also open to the public.

Our summer 2017 workshops are now open for registration! See below for descriptions of the two workshops that are open to the public and please email tesolcertprog@tc.columbia.edu with any questions. We especially encourage prospective students to consider attending one of our upcoming workshops for the opportunity to meet current students, gain exposure to the TESOL Certificate Program, and learn new skills.

Phonetics for English Teachers

Date: July 22, 2017 (10am-3pm)

Cost: $150

DescriptionDespite the fact that English language learners are almost invariably interested in improving their pronunciation, ESL and EFL teachers often neglect this aspect of effective communication. One reason may be a lack of understanding of the English sound system. This workshop is designed to give teachers an overview of the mechanics of sound production as well as an understanding of word- and sentence-level stress. Appropriate for both experienced and novice teachers, the workshop will help prepare teachers to work with their students on pronunciation and prosody.

Teaching English to Low Beginners

Date: July 29, 2017 (10am-3pm)

Cost: $150

Description: Without sharing the same first language with the students, teaching ESL to absolute or low beginners can be very challenging. This workshop focuses on approaches suitable for teaching ESL to adults with beginning level proficiency. Topics include: course design, adapting/developing materials, and teaching strategies.
