Community Life
In addition to stellar academics, Teachers College and Columbia University have extensive resources for students. The nonprofit club in Columbia's Graduate School of Business, CU Arts Initiative, Teachers College's coordinated student events, interest and ethnic-based student organizations help students connect and feel more at home. The Office of Student Activities and Programs provides a wealth of helpful information for students new to Teachers College and New York.

New York City
While New York City needs no extra advertising, it does offer a wealth of opportunity. Students are encouraged to use the city as their classroom on a regular basis, in addition to their internship and work opportunities in arts organizations.



Columbia Volunteers for the Arts (CVA)
Alumni are a critical resource. There are more than 500 of them with jobs ranging from the Vice President of SONY, to senior management at major private foundations, general managers on Broadway and program directors at the Cooper-Hewitt Museum and Lincoln Center. The alumni group for arts administration, known as CVA, is made up of Program alumni from around the world. Their activities include serving as mentors for interns, creating vehicles for communication and professional development and acting as a resource for current students. Members of CVA help to organize several events a year for student-alumni interaction.

Projects targeted to the Columbia Community have included the Columbia Culture Map, a guide to the arts and cultural venues in the Teachers College – Columbia – Barnard area. In a special partnership with Columbia’s Department of Art History, fellowships have been given for creative work on the website. The photographs featured in this brochure and on our website were provided by the Map’s 1999 Fellows, Kendal Kennedy and Il Kim. The map is online in English, Spanish and Chinese with three-dimensional interactive performance and 3-D renderings of select exhibition spaces. Visit the Columbia Culture Map online at

The Partners Program
Started more than a decade ago, the Partners Program is a volunteer initiative created and implemented by students. Incoming students are paired with more advanced students to help them acclimate to the campus, to settle in, get advice on life needs and to make new friends. The Partners Program coordinators host an official welcome event when new students arrive and organize several events throughout the year.

The Program is extremely service-oriented and customized for its students to give them the benefit of a highly selective program with a small cohort of colleagues, in a large and great Ivy League university.
