Through the Teachers College Bilingual Extension Institute, bilingual speech-language pathologists acquire the knowledge and skills needed to provide quality services to bilingual populations with a primary focus on birth through high school. During the Institute's 18 years of existence, students have come speaking many different languages including Spanish, Arabic, Yiddish, Polish, Greek, Russian, Japanese, Mandarin, Italian, Tamil, Urdu, etc. The bilingual proficiency standard is the NYSED Bilingual Education Assessment, which must be passed for students to be awarded the bilingual extension certificate by NYSED. The Institute meets the academic and clinical requirements of the NYSED bilingual extension certificate to the TSSLD teaching certificate. Those who do not practice in NYS receive a certificate of completion.
