Examining Kosovar Teacher Experiences of the Implementation of a New Citizenship Education Curriculum
Erwin Selimos
This study examines the experiences of four educators in implementing a new
citizenship education curriculum in post-war Kosovo. The research paper begins with a detailed explanation of Kosovo’s education system, outlining how educational reforms in Kosovo, including the creation of a new citizenship education curriculum, are intimately tied to larger post-war nation-building goals. As a qualitative study, the experiences of four Kosovar educators regarding the early implementation of the new citizenship education program are considered and compared to findings in other scholarly literature about teacher experiences of mandated change. This study found that Kosovar teacher experiences of educational change largely corresponded to teacher experiences of mandated change identified in other scholarly work. Emerging from this comparison, suggestions are made of how educators can improve the implementation of new educational programs or reforms in similar settings.
