Road to College: Active Preparation towards College Admission for 9th graders at Urban Academy
Eunyoung Jenny Kim
Although students’ aspirations to attend a post-secondary institution is at its highest, students’ awareness of college admission requirements and preparation is inadequate. There are deep inequalities throughout the high school system in terms of college counseling, college preparation course offerings, and college information dissemination. Students of urban public schools, who are typically Black/Hispanic, low socio-economic status, first-generation college students and English Language learners are often at the greatest disadvantage. The overarching goal of my action research project was to provide freshman with useful college information to plan their high school years effectively such that they become more competitive candidates for college. My research revealed that using various college web resources helped to increase students’ familiarity with college admission preparation and their ability to research college-related resources.
