Motivation and Retention of Bhutanese Teachers in the Teaching Profession

Phuntsho C. Wangchuk

With modern education introduced not too long ago in the early 1960s in Bhutan, a country nestled in the Himalayas, since then Bhutan has made tremendous progress in all areas of development.  However, the education sector especially the teaching profession faces the dilemma of recruiting qualified and interested candidates.  This study focuses on teacher motivation and retention; it is based on the responses of the interviews conducted with six Bhutanese teachers with insights from an education official.  It emphasizes on what made these teachers join the teaching profession and what would make them leave the profession for the four of them who are still in the profession and what made the two of the teachers interviewed leave the profession.  Gathering this information, the study then offers suggestions and recommendations to the Ministry of Education about professional motivations and discouragements to enhance the teaching profession thereby leading to more recruitment and retention of teachers.
