Dr. Carol Benson

Lecturer in International and Transcultural Studies

Dr. Carol Benson is a Lecturer in the Department of International and Transcultural Studies at Teachers College. With educational development experience across Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe, her scholarly interests include exploring the mismatch between home and school language, bilingual education, teacher training, anthropology and languages. She has ongoing projects to determine effective implementation and policy strategies for mother tongue-based multilingual education, examine the unique talents of learners and teachers from multilingual contexts, explore innovative curriculum and assessment strategies, and demonstrate how use of learners’ home languages facilitates girls' education. Her most recent study examines how educational development discourse reflects (or not) a deep understanding of evidence-based justifications for multilingual education. She holds a Ph.D. in Social Sciences and Comparative Education and an M.A. in International Education, both from the University of California.

Dr. Oren Pizmony-Levy

Assistant Professor in International and Comparative Studies

Dr. Oren Pizmony-Levy is an Assistant Professor in the Department of International and Transcultural Studies at Teachers College. His scholarly interests include global and transnational sociology, social movements, international large-scale assessments, education and sustainable development, and LGBT studies and education. His current research includes a global survey of non-governmental organizations serving LGBTI refugees and asylum seekers, and an impact evaluation of training programs on the protection of gender-based violence within sexually and gender nonconforming refugee populations. He holds a Ph.D. from the Department of Sociology and the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at Indiana University, in addition to two M.A.’s in the field of sociology from both Indiana University and Tel-Aviv University.

Dr. Sandra Schmidt

Assistant Professor of Social Studies Education

Dr. Sandra Schmidt is an Assistant Professor of Social Studies Education in the Arts and Humanities Department at Teachers College. Her scholarly interests include spatial theory, geography education, civic education, and schooling and equity, particularly in relation to gender and sexuality. Her current research titled A Space Called School, explores how young people experience and create civic experiences in schools. She is also conducting research on how African immigrant youth navigate New York City and schools beneath a problematic narrative of the continent titled Merging Landscapes. She has experience on educational projects and research in Malawi, South Sudan, South Africa, Uganda, and Ethiopia. She holds a Ph.D. from Michigan State University and an M.A. from the University of Michigan.

Dr. Lena Verdeli

Associate Professor of Psychology and Education

Dr. Lena Verdeli is an Associate Professor of Psychology and Education in the Counseling and Clinical Psychology Department at Teachers College. Her scholarly interests include the adaptation and evaluation of psychotherapy for depressed and distressed persons across a variety of cultures, contexts, and settings. Her past and current projects include a randomized controlled trial of adapted interpersonal psychotherapy for depressed adults in rural South Uganda (this work was described in a 2012 New York Times article, “Fighting Depression, One Village at a Time) and a randomized controlled trial of adapted interpersonal psychotherapy for depressed adolescents in refugee camps in North Uganda (many of whom were child soldiers). She holds a Ph.D in Clinical Psychlogy from Yeshiva University, an M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Morehead State University and an M. SC. in Social Psychology from the London School of Economics.

Dr. Gita Steiner-Khamsi

Professor Steiner-Khamsi's degrees are a Dr. h.c. of Education (2004) and Ph.D. Social Psychology (1983). Her Scholarly interests include international policy studies in education. School and teacher education reform from an international perspective. Education, development and international cooperation. Transnational policy borrowing/lending and globalization. Theories and methods (case study methodology) in international and comparative education. Analytical work, strategic planning and program evaluations in Mongolia and Central Asia (Tajikistan, Kyrgyz Republic).
