Book Talk: Outdoors with Kids New York City, with the deJong-Lamberts

Please join Cheryl and William deJong-Lambert and their children, Riley and Halina, on Tuesday, July 24th for a talk on their recently published book, Outdoors with Kids New York City: 100 Fun Places to Explore In and Around the City. TC alumni and Peace Corps Fellow William deJong-Lambert is Associate Professor of History at Bronx Community College, City University of New York, and an affiliate faculty at the Harriman Institute at Columbia University. He earned a PhD in Comparative Education at Columbia University and an MA in International Education at Teachers College. Like William, Cheryl served as a Peace Corps Volunteer; she is a writer at the Mount Sinai Medical Center and a longtime freelance journalist.

Outdoors with Kids is a new city-based book series that the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) developed in response to the national "no child left indoors" movement. The book is built on the premise that the city itself is an outdoor destination that extends far beyond Central Park, and as such it features traditional hiking and outdoor activities, as well as urban hiking treks in all five boroughs. There is a companion volume, Outdoors with Kids Boston, written by Kim Foley MacKinnon, and another underway for Philadelphia.

To read about the book project from Riley and Halina's perspectives, visit the blog post on the AMC site. We also will discuss Kids Outdoors, the recently launched blog of the deJong-Lamberts who are are permanent residents in Morningside Heights.

Persons wishing to attend may rsvp the library by Friday, July 20th.
