Guest Talk: LGBT Youth in Schools: A Constructed Dialogue, with Robert A. McGarry

Research on the school experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transgender (LGBT) students suggests that schools continually fail to
meet their safety and healthy climate needs. Among other issues, this
growing body of literature suggests that pejorative, homophobic speech
is an epidemic in our schools. Much of this research depicts teachers as
negligent or ineffective, or worse, adding to the problem. While
teachers are clearly an important part of this story, their experiences,
their perspectives, and their voices have been absent in the discourse
surrounding such issues. This session will focus on a constructed
dialogue between the experiences of LGBT youth in schools in the United
States and teachers in one high school.
Robert A. McGarry is the Director of Education for GLSEN
- the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network. Dr. McGarry is a
former school district administrator with experience leading curriculum
development on both the local and state level. His professional and
academic passions, exemplified by his doctoral thesis: Troubling Teachable Moments: Initiating Teacher Discourse on Homophobic Speech,
brought him to GLSEN where he guides the development of evidence-based
educator resources and serves as a spokesperson on lgbt issues in K-12
schools. Dr. McGarry holds a Doctor of Education degree in Educational
Leadership and Organizational Theory from the University of
Pennsylvania.
Introducing Dr. McGarry is Assistant Professor Michael G. Wilson, Assistant Professor of Education in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching, whose class, C&T 5905, Discourses in Difference, will be in attendance.
