Research Workshop: Got It? Get Lit! How to Do a Literature Review

A review of literature is an important first step
in the process of writing a thesis or dissertation, or any paper for
publication. It allows you to read and critique articles and books that have
already been written on your topic or related topics, allowing you to both find
sources and to assess the best way to hone your topic in order to contribute to
a body of literature in need. The UNC
Writing Center aptly summarizes the advantages of the literature review:
"It might give a new interpretation of old material or combine new with
old interpretations. Or it might trace the intellectual progression of the
field, including major debates. And depending on the situation, the literature
review may evaluate the sources and advise the reader on the most pertinent or
relevant." We will assist you in locating the sources needed to complete
your review and offer guidance on the process.
