About the Speakers
DEBORAH DANTZLER WILLIAMS, Executive Director
Inspired Teaching Demonstration Public Charter School, Washington, D.C.
Deborah has more than 30 years of progressive experience in the field of education. She brings a breadth and depth of experience, having taught at the elementary, secondary, and university levels, and served as administrator leading programs and divisions. Early in her career she served as Professor at the College of Education at UDC, teaching graduate and undergraduate students and chairing the faculty evaluation committee. Deborah taught at Washington area independent schools and was appointed or elected to serve on Board of Trustees' Committees including Academic Program Evaluation, Long-Range and Strategic Planning, Diversity and Head of School Searches. She has held administrative positions including Lower School Technology Director at Sidwell Friends School, Primary Division Director at Beauvoir, The National Cathedral Elementary School, and Director of the Lower School at Holton-Arms.
Prior to becoming Executive Director of Inspired Teaching Demonstration School, Deborah served as Director of Strategic Partnerships at Center for Inspired Teaching, was faculty for the Center’s Teacher Certification Program and a member of the Founding Group for Inspired Teaching Demonstration Public Charter School.
Deborah completed an MA in Organization and Leadership at Teachers College, Columbia University, where she was in the inaugural cohort of the Leadership Academy of the Klingenstein Center. She also holds an MCP from the School of Architecture and Planning and a BA from the Honors Program of Howard University.
In her current position Deborah is thrilled to have the opportunity to bring a progressive model to the instructional program of students in public schools and she is eager to ensure that teachers have the support and resources to do their best work.

VALERIE JOSEPH
Valerie Joseph worked for the New York City Department of Education for more than 32 years.  During this time, she served as a Special Education teacher, an Educational Evaluator, a Reading Recovery teacher, a Staff Developer, an Assistant Principal, and as an Interim Acting Principal, prior to being appointed Principal of Public School 179, in Brooklyn, New York, which she considers to be the hallmark of her career.   After serving as Principal at P.S. 179 for six years, Valerie retired from the New York City Department of Education in 2011.  She has recently joined the faculty at St. Francis College as an Adjunct Professor of Education, coaching and mentoring student teachers.  Since instruction is her passion, Valerie has been enjoying her new role tremendously.
 
PEARL ROCK KANE
Pearl Rock Kane, a professor of education at Teachers College, Columbia University, holds the Klingenstein Family Chair for the Advancement of Independent School Education.  She holds a master of arts degree from Smith College and a doctorate from Teachers College. Professor Kane serves as the director of the Klingenstein Center and is the advisor for the master's degree programs. She is also coordinator of education leadership programs which includes both public and private schools. Professor Kane taught and served as an administrator in public and private schools in Michigan, Massachusetts and New York. She is active on several Boards including the United Nations School in New York City and Uncommon Schools, a charter management organization. She is a founding member of Brooklyn Prospect Charter School in Brooklyn, NY. 
 
Professor Kane is the recipient of a number of honors and awards including the 2009 National Association of Principals for Schools for Girls Outstanding Achievement Award, and the European Council of International Schools 2008 Award for Exemplary Contribution and Outstanding Service to Promotion of International Education.
 
She is editor of The First Year of Teaching: Real World Stories by America's Teachers, Independent Schools, Independent Thinkers and The Colors of Excellence: Hiring and Keeping Teachers of Color in Independent Schools. She has published numerous articles on issues of leadership, diversity, governance, and the attraction and retention of teachers. Her current areas of research focus on privatization, charter schools, and independent school leadership and governance.
