On January 25, 2013 Teachers College kicked off its 125th Anniversary, "Celebrating a Tradition for Tomorrow." With activities, events, and resources underway throughout our campus, we are pleased to announce a new symposia to commemorate our founding as the nation's first graduate school of education. Throughout the coming months, we will explore our past, live our present, and look to our future, as we highlight achievements, challenges, trends, and developments in the broad areas of leadership, health, psychology, and education.

We draw attention to the research of Robert Clarence Livingston, (Ed.D, 1951, Teachers College) who traced the educational and professional history of 126 doctoral candidates in health, physical education, and recreation from 1935 through September, 1950. Livingston found that "the general reputation of Teachers College and the reputation of the Department of Health Education and Physical Education were the most influential factors in choosing Teachers College for doctoral study." In 1935 there were but 3 doctoral graduates; in 1949, as many as 30.

Today the programs offered in the areas of Health Studies include Health Education, Nursing Education, and Nutrition and prepare a great many students to serve in leadership roles in community-based organizations, government agencies, corporations, health care settings, and educational settings.

Please join us on Monday, April 22nd for our next symposium Celebrating Health for Tomorrow, with John Allegrante and Sonali Rajan, who will articulate achievements in health education at Teachers College, including, most recently, the nation's first program in Diabetes Education and Management. The symposium will present and invite reflection on future trends and developments in health education, including our role as teachers, scholars, and leaders.

Dr. John P. Allegrante is Professor of Health Education and Deputy Provost, and Fulbright Program Advisor and Campus Representative. Professor Allegrante's expertise includes federal education policy, health education, higher education and workforce preparation, and research design and methodology. In addition to numerous scholarly journal articles he is the editor or author of Derryberry's Educating for Health: A Foundation for Contemporary Health Education Practice (Jossey-Bass, 2004) and several health textbooks published by Pearson/Prentice Hall. Dr. Allegrante has a B.S. from the State University of New York, Cortland, and M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois.

Sonali Rajan is Assistant Professor of Health Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. Dr. Rajan earned her Doctor of Education in Health Education and a Master of Science in Applied Statistics, both from Teachers College, Columbia University. She also has a Bachelor of Science in Biological Engineering from Cornell University. From 2010 through 2012, Dr. Rajan completed her post-doctoral training at the Behavioral Science Training program at the National Development and Research Institutes. Examples of Dr. Rajan's research include identifying patterns of risk behaviors among vulnerable youth, assessing and monitoring key indicators of emotion regulation among high-risk adolescents, and developing and implementing school-based health education programs. In 2009 Dr. Rajan developed an innovative evidence-based after-school curriculum for adolescent girls, entitled Girls on Track in collaboration with the non-profit organization Girls on the Run, International. This curriculum is currently being implemented in over 200 locations around the United States and Canada, reaching more than 10,000 adolescent girls each year.
