C&T Colloquium: Inclusivity as Stance, with Sarah Schlessinger

Thirty
years of research shows that inclusive education can improve educational
outcomes for students with labeled disabilities and that inclusive education
does not detrimentally affect the performance of students without labeled
disabilities. Yet, the implementation of inclusive schooling and practices is
still highly controversial in schools, largely due to the dominating audit
culture of the current educational climate. During this colloquium, Sarah
Schlessinger will present her research on the work of NYC teachers attempting
to implement inclusive practices in an increasingly difficult climate and the
development of her own inclusive stance through the dissertation process.
Sarah
Schlessinger is a doctoral candidate in Curriculum Studies at Teachers
College, Columbia University in the
Curriculum & Teaching Program. Her
research interests are in social justice as it is enacted through inclusive
classroom practices, specifically referring to notions of normalcy,
marginalization and the intersections of race, class, and ability. Sarah is
also an instructor in the Elementary
Inclusive Education Program at Teachers College, and the senior research
associate for the Teachers College Inclusive Classrooms
Project.
