Academic Language in edTPA and Beyond: Issues and Assistance for Teacher Candidates

This presentation will examine how academic language is described and conceptualized in edTPA and beyond. Participants will identify academic language features at the vocabulary, syntax, and discourse levels (according to several edTPA handbooks) and discuss how teacher educators can assist teacher candidates in identifying the academic language demands of the lessons they teach and the academic language students will produce.

Presenter: Dr. Luciana C. de Oliveira is an Associate Professor of TESOL and Applied Linguistics at Teachers College, Columbia University. Dr. de Oliveira’s research focuses on issues related to teaching K-12 English language learners (ELLs) and teacher preparation for ELLs, in particular how to address the academic language demands of the content areas.
