Cory A. Booker, the mayor of Newark, NJ, is the politician to watch, according to many sources.   He was named one of America''s Best Leaders in April 2006 by US News and World report, one of Esquire magazine''s "40 Best and Brightest" in December 2002, one of New Jersey''s "Top 40 Under 40" by New Jersey Monthly, and one of "The Hot List: America''s Most Powerful Players Under 40" by Black Enterprise in December 2005.  

 

Mr. Booker has extensive experience with community organizing.   He served as a Staff Attorney for the Urban Justice Center, as well as a Program Coordinator of the Newark Youth Project.   He then ran for city council against a four-term incumbent, and won the seat.   In 2002, he ran a close but unsuccessful campaign for mayor of Newark against an incumbent, and was elected mayor of Newark in 2006.   During his many years of service, Mr. Booker has earned a reputation as a strong and inspired leader with a deep commitment to the Newark community.  

 

Mr. Booker sits on the Board of Trustees at Teachers College and the Executive Committee of Yale Law School as well as on the boards of the Black Alliance for Educational Options, North Star Academy, Integrity Inc., and the International Longevity Center.   In 1991, he received a B.A. in political science, and in 1992, an M.A. in sociology, both from Stanford University.  He then won a Rhodes Scholarship and traveled to Oxford, where he earned an honors degree in Modern History in 1994.   He earned his law degree from Yale University in 1997.
