Former Chair of the Arkansas House Education Committee
Hon. Joyce Elliott is the Director for Legislative and State Outreach at the College Board. She is the former Chair of the Education Committee in the Arkansas House of Representatives, where she served three terms as the representative from Little Rock until 2006. As chair of the Education Committee, she played a leading role in addressing the Arkansas Supreme Court''''s mandates regarding curriculum and accountability. As co-chair of the Joint Committee on Educational Facilities, Ms. Elliott worked together with her legislative colleagues in developing a court-ordered program to refurbish public school facilities in the state. Ms. Elliot began her career as a teacher in New Boston, Texas, where she became the high school’s first black teacher. A local and state union leader, formerly with NEA now with AFT, she also taught in Florida and Minnesota, and ended her 30-year teaching career in Arkansas in 2003 to join the College Board. Ms. Elliott received a BSE in English and speech from Southern Arkansas University and received a Masters degree in English Education from Ouachita Baptist University.
