Beenie Man (Moses Davis) - Biographical notes
BORN: 1972, Kingston, Jamaica Beenie Man (born: Anthony Moses David)
was born to sing reggae. The nephew of Jimmy Cliff's percussionist,
Sidney Knowles, Beenie Man was only eight years old when he auditioned
for producer Junjo Lawes and signed to record for Lawes' record label.
Within a year, Beenie Man was stirring crowds with his singing and dee-jaying
for the sound system, , Lees Unlimited. Two years later, his single,
"Too Fancy", based on a tune recorded by dee-jay duo, Michigan and Smiley,
reached the top of the Jamaican music charts. His debut album, "The
Incredible Ten Year Old Wonder", was released in 1986. Beenie Man has
continued to make his presence felt on Jamaica's dancehall scene, recording
such top ten as "No Mama No Cry", "Tiger Rides In Town" and a duet rendition
of "Papa Was A Rolling Stone", recorded with Third World. Although he
initially avoided gun songs and violent themes that were becoming a
staple of Jamaican dee-jaying, he began to take a militant stance with
songs, including "Never Die A Mobster" and "Defend It", in the mid-1990s.
