A new project on world class universities
The Center on Chinese Education is a sponsor of a new project on world-class universities. The World Class University Project is a response to the developmental goals of China's leading universities to be ranked among the best universities in the world. There has been great ambiguity on what this means precisely. This project has several phases: (1) a search of literature on the interpretation of the term "world class university" and a systematic content analysis of the features of this literature; (2) a tentative survey of experts on the meaning of the term; (3) a collection of rankings and ratings of universities from around the world; and (4) empirical analysis of the determinants of those rankings and ratings. The findings from this study will be summarized in reports and presented at the Third Forum for Presidents of National Universities in China in August 2006. The project is directed by Professor Henry Levin of Teachers College Columbia University.
