Reading Buddies 2006 Training Program
RB Training: TC Reading Buddies (TCRB’s) attend training sessions every morning for two and a half hours per day for 3 weeks, prior to beginning tutoring in schools. Training for the RB program reflects an interdisciplinary and systems approach. TCRB’s complete the NYS Mandated Reporter training on Child Abuse and the Research on Human Subjects requirements. Lectures and activities including training in phonics (including Great Leaps) are presented by specialists in the teaching of Reading and by faculty in Cognitive Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Curriculum & Teaching and Organizational Behavior and Leadership. As compensation, Reading Buddies receive a three (3) credit tuition scholarship and are required to work two and a half hours per day, five days per week, for the length of the TC academic semester. Reading Buddies are allowed three absences in any given semester and are expected to be consistent in their attendance at their assigned schools. Tutoring is conducted between 8:30am and noon, and individual schedules are arranged to benefit the child being tutored and to support the classroom teacher. One (1) TC Reading Buddy is assigned to a classroom and six (6) children from that classroom are selected to work with their TC Buddy for the semester. Classroom teachers and Reading Buddies are expected to confer on a regular basis about the progress of tutees.
